New York City Sexual Orientation Discrimination Lawyers

Seeking Equal Treatment at Work, Regardless of Sexual Orientation

Discrimination and bias based on sexual orientation is an often-overlooked phenomenon in American workplaces. In fact, federal law does not currently prohibit employers from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation. However, New York state and New York City have passed laws and ordinances addressing the issue.

At Khan & Yau, P.C., our New York sexual orientation discrimination attorneys represent gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender employees who have suffered discrimination at work. We know that these issues are sensitive, and that you may be hesitant to seek legal help for fear of being fired. We want you to know that in New York, you cannot be retaliated against for asserting your rights as a GLBT employee.

Understanding New York's Laws on Sexual Orientation Discrimination

Much of our employment law practice focuses on helping employees who have been discriminated against by an employer. In sexual orientation discrimination matters, our lawyers look at all the circumstances and determine whether New York's laws were violated. The two main laws are:

The Sexual Orientation Non-Discrimination Act (SONDA): Passed in 2002, this law makes New York one of the few states to ban sexual orientation discrimination. The law treats this kind of discrimination much the same as racial or religious discrimination have been treated for years.

The New York City Human Rights Law: This local ordinance also prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, which gives transgender employees in New York City stronger protection than in most other cities.

When you visit us, we will educate you about your rights as a GLBT employee and help you choose the best course of action. If you have been the victim of discrimination or sexual harassment, we encourage you to reach out to our experienced legal team for help.
